Skin Color and Oppression

by guest blogger M. Peoples

Does the color of someone's skin make them the target of oppressive acts? What happens or should happen when this leads to a death?

A 17 year old African-American teenager was gunned down by a neighborhood watch captain this weekend under the guise of self-defense because the boy looked suspicious after leaving a store to make a purchase. There have been several blogs and articles released on this situation. Click on the links below to get the full story from different perspectives and to answer the questions that I have asked.

  1. WOW!! that's deep... the article sounded like Mr. Zimmerman got trigger happy with his 9mm, and from what the article stated, he is also Guilty as well... Trayvon Martin was not armed or carrying a weapon...The article also stated that the police dispatcher insisted that Mr. Zimmerman stand down, and he continued to follow the young boy anyway...He's a murder and no I do not think it was self-defense on his behave.

Yes, I believe racial profiling is still alive and well or else Treyvon would still be here. Stereotyping, racial profiling and anything in between is subjective to oppressive acts.. For instance, I know people who didn't get hired at jobs because of the way there names sounded on an application or the part of town they live on...America is crazy is still needs much work.

    Question #2
When this leads to death, so form of action should go into play... When regular people take the law into their own hands, they should suffer the consequences....

    Kinda obvious isn't it?

  3. Justice delayed is justice denied. Would one be politically correct to assert that this is the case of Trayvon Martin? From the recorded 911 calls, it is obvious that Zimmerman was warned not to follow the 17 year old victim by the police but he ignored that instruction!
Personally it is my desire that the law of 'Stand your ground' in Florida be re-visited and amended. This is because i feel 'total' justice hasn't been served as at this moment per Trayvon Martin.
