This article talks about how women in upper management are held to a different standard when they portray similar behavior as their male counterparts. They are identified as being “queen bee” like, or diva like instead of the descriptions ascribed to the men who hold the same tags.
· In this day and age, why are “traits,” especially in the workplace, named as masculine or feminine? Why are women still labeled in a derogatory manner when they exhibit the same behavior, as men, while the men are not held to the same candle?
· How do we, as women, combat this?
The descriptive words used to give meaning to the actions that people feel are generally used by women are placed in the workplace even still today because in order to still somewhat have a rank as far as male and female there has to be a reasoning to why those particular females are there. When I say this I mean that some people feel that in order to keep some women in their place they need to give these women a certain connotation so that other women do not seek to be like them. Men aren't held to the same candle because in the viewpoint of society that is how they are supposed to be as opposed to women who are to be quiet and kept. Its very hard to say how we as women can combat this because they is an ever present stigma that women are to be the ones at home and not running things if they are to work so it is a hard thing to fight although I do believe it can be done.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Ms. Peoples. To further answer your question Rebecca T.: masculine and feminine traits are given to behaviors in the workplace because prescribing a name or categorizing is apart of human behavior, which is why both men and women still believe a man should work and a woman should take care of home. If we are all honest we would admit when we think of certain professions we instantly attach whether it is a man's job or a woman's job, even though, it's 2012 and men and women are possibly in every profession these days.
